The Botafumeiro is one of the most famous symbols of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

This large silver plated brass censer is a truly spectacular sight to witness, as it swings from the central dome of the Cathedral above the congregation. Suspended at a height of 20m it builds momentum and reaches speeds of 60km/hour as it swings from its system of pulleys. Eight specialist men "the tiraboleiros", are needed to move 53 kg censer which measures 1.50 meters.

Botafumeiro Schedule

The Botafumeiro is no longer in regular use on Fridays, as in earlier years. It can be requested through official channels and requires a donation to the Cathedral. We are able to arrange this for you by request.

  • The Epiphany: January 6
  • Easter Sunday
  • The Ascension of the Lord
  • The Apparition of the Apostle-Clavijo: May 23
