The Botafumeiro is one of the most famous symbols of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

This large silver plated brass censer is a truly spectacular sight to witness, as it swings from the central dome of the Cathedral above the congregation. Suspended at a height of 20m it builds momentum and reaches speeds of 60km/hour as it swings from its system of pulleys. Eight specialist men “the tiraboleiros”, are needed to move 53 kg censer which measures 1.50 meters.
